Keep a generous supply of fresh fruits and vegetables on hand during the summer to help prevent dehydration. Today, we would like to tell you about the benefits of each of these nutrient-packed summer foods.

 

Blueberries

From May through October, keep your eye out for these deep blue spheres, which are loaded with fiber, Vitamin C and antioxidants that fight inflammation.

Red Bell Peppers

Available May through September, these sweet, crispy treats are packed full of beta carotene and Vitamin C, with many benefits such as boosting the immune system.

Tomatoes

From late June through September, you’ll find vine-ripened tomatoes at their peak. Another antioxidant-rich food with numerous benefits, especially for the heart.

Watermelon

Nearly synonymous with summertime, watermelon is usually sold fresh from May through August but can be found as late as November. In addition to perhaps being the very juiciest fruit, watermelon, like tomatoes, is a source of lycopene, an antioxidant, as well as Vitamins A and C.

Figs

A staple in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures, these fiber-rich fruits are an excellent source of calcium and potassium, which helps control blood pressure. They are available fresh from June through September.

Strawberries

A favorite in every household, strawberries can be found fresh from April through August, providing an excellent source of Vitamin C.

Cherries

The flavonoids that give cherries their deep red color also help regulate immune responses and combat inflammation. Available fresh from May through August.
